"The rooftop was the hardest to figure out because it's Wind-chester," Tomat co-owner Natalie Dial told The Argonaut this summer. "It's windy up there. We had umbrellas, but they weren't quite enough shade. So, we just shut it down around December and did a little revamp."
The rooftop at 6261 W. 87th St. reopened this summer with sturdier shade structures, heaters, TVs, a new menu and its own grill and chef. That small fix matters more than it looks. With the rooftop back, the 6200 block of 87th Street has something scheduled on almost every day from Wednesday to Sunday. On Saturday, October 10, the Westchester Saturday Stroll brings all of it onto one block at the same time.
Tomat opened in 2024. Since March 2025 it has been added to the California Michelin Guide, received a 2026 Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence, been named one of Esquire's Best New Restaurants in America, and made the LA Times 101 Best Restaurants list. Dial traces the restaurant back to a neighborhood council meeting. When the owners went in to explain their concept during the liquor license process, she said, "so many people raised their hands and said, 'We're dying for a date night spot in Westchester. It doesn't exist.'"
Before the rooftop came back, Tomat had already grown into daytime hours. Chef Harry Posner and Dial added a full breakfast menu and more lunch dishes, including a half English breakfast, a gluten-free blue masa pancake, and a pastrami sandwich made entirely in-house, bread included. The soft-serve machine arrived "after much delay" just in time for National Ice Cream Day on July 19. It serves vanilla or peach.
The rooftop is what gives the block its weeknights. The current lineup is board-game night on Wednesday, trivia on Thursday, and rotating DJs and live jazz on Saturdays and Sundays. Tomat posts the next week's schedule on its website and Instagram every Sunday. The hours have shifted since the Argonaut piece, which described daily service. Tomat's own site now lists Wednesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 5 to 8:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. until late. Check that page before you head over.
The rooftop is one piece of the week on this block. The bookstore next door, the Sunday market and the bakery down the block cover most of the hours it doesn't.

Sunday is the busiest day on the block. The Westchester Town Center BID presents the Westchester Farmers' Market, which brings farmers, food vendors, artisans, live music and children's entertainment from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Book Jewel's weekly "Stories with Thera" starts at 11:30 a.m., and its own listing points families to the market down the street. The bookstore's October calendar also includes an author reading and signing and Journaling at the Jewel. Westchester Bakery at 6216 W. 87th St. makes custom cakes and desserts.
On Saturday, October 10, the Westchester Saturday Stroll runs from 4 to 7 p.m. on 87th Street in the Westchester Triangle. It's free. The Westchester Business Improvement District, Drollinger Properties and the Westchester Streetscape Improvement Association present it together. The HomeTown News described the August edition as bringing "art, music, treats, community and fun while the street is closed to traffic." It also credited the Town Center BID and the Drollinger Family Charitable Foundation along with WSIA.
This is the third of four Strolls this year. The series started May 9 with a Mother's Day theme, featuring music, dining, shopping and activities. August 15 had a summer theme. The last one is December 5. The organizers' announcements promise live music, local dining and shopping, art, games, crafts, treats, vendors and seasonal performers. As of early October, no vendor or performer list for October 10 had been published in the sources checked. In June the organizers said the August lineup would come "closer to the event," so expect October's to arrive the same way.
The timing works out well. The Stroll ends at 7 p.m., and Tomat's weekend hours run until late. Saturday is also a rooftop DJ or live jazz night. The day after, the farmers' market sets up at 9 a.m. on the same block. With an afternoon street event, a rooftop evening and a Sunday morning market, the October 10 weekend is the longest stretch of programming the block will have this fall.
The rooftop mural ties the block's present to its past. David Russell, a local artist and senior lecturer at LMU and Otis College of Art & Design, painted it to show the businesses and buildings that shaped Westchester's identity. One of them is Karl's Toys. According to The Argonaut, the toy store once occupied the building Tomat now shares with The Book Jewel.
"There's a lot of people my parents' age who come to the rooftop and say, 'I remember when this was Karl's Toys,'" Dial said. Her family's history in Westchester goes back about 80 years, to her great-grandmother. The second floor has an events space in the pastry kitchen that looks out over The Book Jewel.
The Stroll fits the same pattern. Drollinger Properties ran an earlier Second Saturday Stroll series on this street, with live performances and arts-and-crafts booths. The 2026 series brings it back on four Saturdays between May and December, run by the same mix of property owner, business district and streetscape association that already takes care of the block.
Before this summer's reopening, the owners shut the rooftop down "around December" to fix the wind and shade problems. This year it has heaters and stronger shade. Tomat hasn't published winter hours for the rooftop, and its site describes it only as open, with the weekly schedule posted on Sundays. So it's still an open question whether game night and trivia carry on through December, the month the rooftop went quiet for its revamp. The Sunday schedule post is the place to watch.
The block's other December plans are already set:
If you're coming from the airport side of the neighborhood, LAWA's construction work closes westbound Century Boulevard between Jetway Boulevard and Vicksburg Avenue overnight through Friday, November 13.
